Boy, I had a rough couple of days and that’s why I’m combining day 3 and day 4 on my blog. I’m happy to say I’m feeling much better tonight. Yesterday, I had general anesthesia and Cryoablation. This is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy diseased tissue, including cancer cells. During Cryoablation, liquid nitrogen flows into a needle-like applicator or cryoprobe. This creates intense cold that the doctor uses to freeze and destroy diseased tissue. Doctors use ultrasound to help guide the cryoprobes to treatment sites within the body. Once I woke up from anesthesia, I wasn’t feeling the best. My sickness got worse throughout the night. I had severe nausea. This morning, I had to be wheeled into a hospital van and then taken to the hospital where I stayed at for treatment. I was given IV anti nausea medicine and lots of fluids. I started feeling better in the afternoon. I was supposed to get the Coley’s injection IV today. I mentioned Coley’s Therapy on day 1 but that was an injection in the muscle that I received. Today, would be a powerful dose given IV. The doctor left the decision up to me if I was feeling up to it. To recap Coley’s therapy, it’s a treatment using dead sterile bacteria that coaxes the immune system to fight cancer by releasing a dendritic cell storm. With IV injection, some patients may become very sick with a fever and chills but this only lasts for 20 to 40 minutes. Well, I decided to go forward with it today. I did have really bad chills. My body was shaking uncontrollably and then I broke out into a sweat. Then I fell asleep. My chills only lasted 20 minutes. I’m glad I stayed on course with my treatment. At the end of the day, I received Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBO). Hyperbaric oxygen can be used to overcome hypoxia. This is important because cancer stem cells thrive in a hypoxic environment. HBO is based on administration of 100% oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. HBO treatment enhances the amount of dissolved oxygen in the plasma, thereby increasing O2 tissue delivery independent of hemoglobin. So basically I get to sit in this closed chamber for an hour wearing an oxygen mask. But there is a bed and TV so I can watch a movie for an hour while relaxing in bed. Not too bad.. but my ears do pop. After the session was over, I felt really good!
